Blog Post #18: “I Could Stay Here Forever”

Blog #18

We have hiked the Duck Pass Trail out of Coldwater Campground in the Lakes Basin (near Mammoth Lakes, CA) many times. Each hike is a unique experience since time of day, weather, temps, and state of being all contribute to how we feel and how we manage the trail. This recent outing was glorious in many respects. We got to the trailhead early to avoid the crowds . Temps were cool and we had gotten enough sleep, so were energized. Destinations for many hikers are the lakes passed along the trail – Arrowhead, Skelton and Barney. We decided to continue beyond Barney and headed up the pass. It seems we never stop long enough at the spectacular viewpoints along the gradually rising trail. The gigantic rock walls and steps remind me of the crushing labor which must have been involved to create this trail. Miraculously, flowers and plants thrive among the rock crevices. There is always a welcomed lunch break overlooking Duck Lake as we hit the top of the Pass. I could stay here forever, but the reality of hiking those 4 miles back to the car always wins!

  1. Sounds enchanting- almost (almost!) makes me want to take up hiking again. Beautiful photo, too. All the best to you and Dick. r.

    1. Hi Ron - We still enjoy hiking and backpacking, although I carry less weight these days. Mammoth Lakes where we live gives us access to some amazing places with views like this one on Duck Pass. I keep up with your wanderings and you DO get around! Your photos are superb. Thanks for the comment. Our best to Cathy. (Her garden is spectacular)!
