Names given to mountains and lakes in the Eastern Sierra tend not to be exclusive to just one location. In other words, there is a Barney Lake near Bridgeport and a Barney Lake near Mammoth Lakes. Since we live in Mammoth Lakes, we hiked to the other Barney Lake near Bridgeport. We chose this particular day because it was to be the last “good” hiking day before temps turned cold again. This is mid-May, mind you, but in the Eastern Sierra one can expect Mother Nature to mix things up a bit. In this case, the weather forecaster said “wind and snow over the next 3 days.” What a bummer! The plants in my small front flower bed are just starting to appear and I am anxious to plant tomatoes and herbs in the raised bed on our back porch. Anyway, I digress. The hike to Barney Lake was perfect. The 4-mile trail took us through pine forests, open meadows, past a raging river, waterfalls, snowy mountains and rocky cliffs. We ate lunch next to some downed logs to get out of the wind. Temps were in the 50’s here, so no sticking bare feet in the water at the lake’s edge this day. We took a few obligatory photos and headed back. I need to go back when it gets a little warmer!
