In past years, Mammoth Mountain has invited guests to ride the gondola to the summit of the mountain in time to enjoy a sunrise, all free of charge. Many photographers, including me, have taken advantage of this opportunity. The trick is to take one of the first rides up to secure a favorite spot to catch the sunrise. I wanted to photograph the Lakes Basin and Mammoth Crest. I set up on a rocky promontory overlooking the Basin and was able to capture this image as the light grazed the top of the Sierra Nevada ridges. That’s Mammoth Crest on the right and Lakes George, Horseshoe and McLeod (from left to right). In summer, we like to climb up to the Crest where the views looking back towards the Lakes Basin are spectacular!

Wow that is great photograph. The light is amazing
Thanks Al! We lucked out on the light and there weren't many other photographers to contend with on that rocky ledge. It was worth the early morning wake-up and chilly morning air.
